erik solheim: Former Executive Director of the Un Environment Program & keynote speaker at green connections 2019

10/30/2019

Today's interview introduces Erik Solheim, Norwegian Diplomat, former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program and this year's Keynote Speaker at Green Connections. His previous experience and professional achievements makes it an honor to welcome Mr. Solheim to this year's conference, held on November 21. Read the entire interview below.

What awoke your interest to pursue a career working in sustainability?
As I child I spent all summer holidays in the Norwegian mountains running after the cows, breathing the clean air and enjoying the immense beauty. Any  number of weekends we walked or skied  in Oslo city forests which I later as a minister took pride of protecting for future generations. Environmentalism starts with the love of nature.

What are the key aspects in creating a more sustainable business sector in the forthcoming years?
Business is now ahead of politics in most countries. Business leaders understand that business in the long run can only prosper in a world where we reduce pollution, stop global warming and protect Mother Earth. The more we can turn an environment challenge into a business opportunity, the faster it will be resolved.

Have you observed any fascinating ”renewable trends” in the recent period?
Indeed. Look at India. They have the first all solar airport in the world, the first all solar rail station and the New Delhi metro will soon be powered by solar. India has the cheapest solar in the world, price is now much lower that for coal. It means any number of planned coal plant are out into the archives.

Who has inspired you the most to choose the professional path you are on?
My love for nature and core values I learned from my parents. When it comes to leadership no person eclipses Abraham Lincoln as the ultimate, all time role model.

Do you have a quote that inspires you?

Mahatma Gandhi: "You need to be the change you want to see in this world".

In what way do you believe that Green Connections could have a significant impact?
California is a global laboratory for so many environment practices. You see great leadership form the state and California is of course home to the most iconic companies of modern capitalism. The state is a global symbol of innovation and vibrant human progress. So linking up with companies here, exchanging best practices and learn from each other is very exciting.

What do you hope to learn from Green Connections?
I hope to be wiser and understand more when I leave San Diego the when I arrived.
