Filip Syta was a Management Associate at SACC San Diego during the Spring of 2011. After his internship he got a job at the software giant Google. However, after two years Syta decided to leave the corporate world to pursue his passion of writing novels, and his debut literary novel The Show tells you why. The book is a satirical, true, and unsavory tale revealing the savagery behind the glamour of Silicon Valley.
We had the pleasure to talk to Mr Syta about his debut novel and what inspired him to write the book. Read the interview below.
You are a former SACC San Diego Management Associate. Since then, what have you been up to?
Yes, I was at SACC San Diego Spring of 2011. It was valuable and fun, the organization is strong and it’s great to see that it continues to prosper and serve its members. I met a lot of interesting people during my time at SACC, many whom I’m still in contact with.
When did you understand that you wanted to pursue your dream of becoming an author?
In eight grade English class back home in Sweden. I read American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. Once my teacher saw what I was reading she wrote a note to my mother informing her about it. I don’t blame her, it might have not been the most suitable book for a 14-year old. But it opened my world, and my passion for writing was born. Hopefully I can inspire some kid as well, just as Bret Easton inspired myself.
Tell us more about your debut novel. What’s the story?
The Show follows the life of Harvard grad Vic, who just scored a job at tech empire SHOW. But in the hunt for success and happiness, Vic falls into a shady world of sex, drugs, and swindle. The young tech elites are just as greedy as Wall Street bankers, but all the more cunning. Vic’s life doesn’t turn out as expected and he has to face the world of an ambitious generation stuck in the corporate world.
What inspired you to write the novel? Is it pure fiction or is there some truth in it?
My years working at Google, and life in general. We are told to study certain things and work with certain things. Media and our surrounding often define success. It should be defined by yourself, only you can decide if you’re successful and happy, and at the end of the day nobody else should care.
We should follow our dreams and passions instead, make use of our true talents and focus on what’s truly important in life. My job didn’t provide me with any satisfaction, and my dream was to become a novelist, so I quit and started to make it my reality. I wanted to pursue my passion.
It is inspired by true events. I don’t believe there is such thing as pure fiction. All fiction is a mix of real life experiences and impressions, bits and pieces from the world put together into a story, into characters.
What’s your next step? Are you working on a new book?
Right now I’m focusing on the release of The Show. I’m writing guest articles in different magazines to keep the words flowing. I will definitely work on a new book but it will remain a secret for the moment, you’ll have to wait and see.
Why should I read The Show?
To find what you love, realize what’s truly important in life and act on it.
